2015 coming to a close

Time to close out 2015 - and welcome 2016.  December was lots of fun, super busy and finally over.

In the previous post, the Advent Calendar - one of the days was a ticket to a play, "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown".  Here's Kathryn with "Snoopy"
Baking day at Korrynee's:

All fancy for the family Christmas party - the hug was voluntary!

Kathryn and I went to a version of the Nutcracker. Not the professional version - but fun and a great experience for both.  I had never seen it!
Her classmate and friend, Sofia.  We went with Sofia and her Mom.

Paul's birthday....  the cake is Chocolate cake with Chocolate Peanut butter frosting. It was coma inducing.
And Christmas Day at home.

Ryan says this was his 2nd favorite gift from Santa.  An economy pack of Pringles (aka Prinkles if you're Ryan), for his school lunch.  Usually an off limits snack.
His favorite gift was a pack of baseball cards for 2015.

Kathryn and Ruby on Christmas Day.
Lastly, Ryan showing off his scooter skills
And that does it.
Hoping in 2016 Paul continues to thrive at ScottTrade.
We can replace our aging home windows with new.
Kathryn and Ryan continue to sail through school with minimal upheavals.
And for me... to be accepting of the challenges put in front of me - especially via my kids!

Advent Calendar

Feeling a little crafty this year, I attempted a homemade advent calendar.  Success!  In the end, it took me longer than I thought to pull it together....mostly with finding 24 unique fillers.  I am really excited about the end result and looking forward to the daily surprise.

Here's how it's filled:
Day 1: a note explaining how it will work (i.e. some days the whole surprise didn't fit, so they need to come to me for the remaining.  A request to be gentle etc).  Followed by a piece of candy.
Day 2:  Puzzle pieces.  Parts of a Christmas puzzle.  Part 1 of 3 they will find in the calendar
Day 3: money
Day 4: theater ticket for the next days You're a Good Man Charlie Brown
Day 5: Coupon to redeem a sweet treat from Mom (Hershey's chocolate milk)
Day 6: glitter tape
Day 7: a gift from Korryn
Day 8: a note to redeem a wrapped book from Mom and Dad
Day 9: Part 2 of 3 of the puzzle
Day 10: a note from Kerri.  (She did her top 10 favorite things about both kids)
Day 11: toothbrush
Day 12: candy
Day 13: movie tickets (Paul's birthday - this was his contribution)
Day 14: eraser/pencil sharpener combo
Day 15: coupon/money for pizza at lunch this week
Day 16: gift from Korryn
Day 17: part 3 of 3 of the puzzle
Day 18: candy
Day 19: coupon for each to redeem to Mom for me to clean their room x 1
Day 20: pair of socks
Day 21: gum
Day 22: candy
Day 23: coupon to redeem a wrapped book from Mom and Dad
Day 24: coupon to look under the Christmas tree for a specially wrapped gift, which will be a lego kit.

School Open House and such

The kids school Open House was held in early November.  Theme was cultural diversity and every child was to pick a country to study.  Both kids picked Korea because of their Korean heritage.  Pictured is Kathryn with Aunt Korryn, traditional Korean bride and groom (Paul and I were given that as a wedding gift from some Korean relatives) and Kathryn is holding her brochure.  We all walked in to the school that evening to find a table full of school brochures with her picture on them.  A true honor, our little cutie.  : )

Ryan is standing in front of a locking rice chest, used to store and protect rice years ago in Korea.  On the wall is an outfit Grandma Soon brought back from Korea when she visited when he was little.  Both kids also gave out Korean candy.  Some good, some VERY interesting in flavor!
My handsome boy
Kathryn was lucky enough to be treated to Disney's Frozen on Ice, by Aunt Bobbi Ann.  I got to go along.  So much fun. Watching Kathryn's reactions was just as much fun as watching the show.
 Truly enamored!

October 2015

Soccer has concluded for the season, relieving Kathryn of her angst.  She was gung ho in the beginning.  Soccer was her decision to try, and apparently not her thing.  By the end of the season the power struggle was on and I heard "You made me do this!" Along with other negative statements.  Sadly the coaching was not all that great, making it a somewhat unstructured 8 weeks for her.  She did make one goal in the second to last game, making it worth it, or so she says.

Pumpkin patch field trip with the first graders.
 Nice face, Miss Kathryn

We bought a new in October, 2015.
2009 Ford Escape with 19k (ish) miles.
Hopefully this one lasts a while.

We tried a new version of pumpkin decorating this year.
Pumpkin drilling!
Out with the pumpkin carving, in with the power tools.
I've never been a fan of knives and pumpkins.
It's just begging for someone to lose a finger.
Drilling seems much safer - truly!
 The final results..........
 This years Halloween costumes.
Kathryn wearing a Kelsey hand-me-down!
Kelsey wore this in 2001

Ryan as my fearless Ninja Turtle.  He borrowed this from his friend Cooper.
 This picture makes me giggle.

And of course, the haul.
6 full size candy bars - even one king size candy bar!
What kid needs that?!
November 6, 2015 the Peanuts movie premiered.
Being the Snoopy fan I am, of course we had to see it. Even sprung for 3D
* (ok - that was $52 for the 4 of us - ummm, ouch.  3D was not worth it........ but I am glad I did it because  a) I have never seen a 3D movie before and   b) I would always have wondered if I should of spent the extra on 3D when I had the chance.  So I did.  And I learned.  Not worth it.)*
--------
The movie is quite good, very fun to watch and was a joy to watch with my kids.
25 years and counting of being a Snoopy collector.  I still get giddy when I find a treasure.  Snoopy still makes me smile.
And because of that Peanuts gang I found a life long friend.... even though we are miles away.  : )
This kid!
He looks extremely grown  up here!
A school year update.
Ryan's interim teacher, Mrs. Rossiter is now done. Having her leave was emotional, yet a positive experience for the kids.  She did an outstanding job filling in on such tragic circumstances.  The search for a permanent 2nd grade teacher was unsuccessful - but the school's music teacher has 5 years of 2nd grade teaching experience in Canada and she agreed to take on this class for the remainder of the year.  She went from part time to full time instantly and as a Mom herself, that's quite a feat.  This was an easy transition for the class (and parents) as Mrs. Bakker is well liked and the rest of the school year should be great.
The search will be on for a replacement teacher for next year, when Kathryn's class moves up.

Fall 2015

Paul was able to resurrect the desktop computer for now. . . it's S.L.O.W, but functional.  Let's catch up on everything!
 *********************************************
First our Bend, Oregon trip with Auntie Karol in June.
An amazing beautiful place to be.
It was so warm, the river was a wonderful place to frolic.
We learned the hard way on the journey there (a 7 hour drive) that Kathryn can get car sick.  Poor thing was nauseated and vomiting all the way there.  It knocked her out for a day, but she rallied the next day.  The trip home wasn't as bad, thankfully.

Fourth of July at Three Tree Point.  Was fun, but we didn't make it to the fireworks this year.  The heat played a big part in wearing us all out.
The kids and Grandma Kathie.

Our annual Seaside trip followed a few weeks later.  Also with Auntie Karol, and Uncle Doug was along too.  Again, very warm weather, making the ocean fun to play in.  This year the kids were able to jump waves and stay in the water much longer than before.  Ryan really liked the deeper water and bigger waves.
Ryan's other obsession was the arcade.  He spent hours (and $$) there.  He scored enough tickets to redeem for an UNO deck, with the Planes Fire and Rescue theme.  Makes me laugh, because it was probably a $40 deck of cards in the end.

Where we've stayed for the past 4 years.

Birthday week was then upon us.   Ryan - 8 years and Kathryn - 6 years.  At our birthday BBQ this year, Kerri, Sam and Sam's son Wyatt were able to make the trip up from Atlanta to join us.  Instantly the kids has a bond with Wyatt - a delightful boy.  Having Kerri & Sam here made it all the more fun.

Here's this years cake.  It had to be completely egg free, as Wyatt has severe allergies to eggs.  It was successful and all reports were that it was well liked.
Ryan and Kathryn provided the cake topper.

 Cousins and Wyatt
Kennedy kids and Wyatt.

The backpack Ryan received from Kerri, Sam and Wyatt.
There is more to this backpack story later on.....  : (
This was Ryan's year for his birthday party.  We combined the day with a classmate of his - Noah.  His Mom and I picked Richmond Beach for the party, inviting all this classmates.  It was an amazingly beautiful day - and HOT!

(ACK! I don't know why they are so small.  Korryn took them with her good camera.  I'm guessing when I saved them from the site they were posted too it altered the size and I don't know how to fix it!)
The cake!  I am immensely proud of this one.
August was also super HOT.  The kids took part in a YMCA camp.  I think Kathryn found the full day camp kind of tough,  her behavior that week was a tad (tad meaning HUGE) tumultuous.  Ryan's camp was baseball theme - which he thoroughly enjoyed.   The entire summer was tough on Kathryn.  I am not sure if it was the lack of structure or what, but she and I struggled to get through.

Paul and Ryan did "Fish Camp" on Whidbey Island this year.  Every odd year, the Pink Salmon make a run through the ocean out there.  Paul, his Dad and this year Ryan made a go at getting as many as possible.  Most days they did not limit, but in the end - caught 70ish (I think?) fish.  They smoke the majority of them.
I get a phone call one morning from Ryan while he is out fishing.
"Mom!  Mom!  Guess what?!  We just saw a pod of whales go through!"  A small pod of Orca whales went by, while the boys were out in the boat.
I'm jealous!
What an experience for that young man!
The fishing that day was the pits after the whales swam through.  : )
Ryan loves his time up at Grandma and Papa's.  Minimal rules, pretty much free reign.  They call it Island Time.  No set bedtime, plenty of computer/TV time.  Junk food galore.  He was a happy boy.

While Paul and Ryan were away, Kathryn and I were holding down the fort at home.  Sadly, one Thursday when she and I were out in the afternoon; our home was burglarized. It occured between noon and 4 pm, but I didn't realize it until 9pm that evening when I headed to bed.  I walk in to my bedroom to find items that are typically high in the closet, down and open on the bed.   Soon see the window screen on the floor with a wide open window.  I'm to blame for leaving the window open.  : (
The drawers on my bureau were open and had been gone through.
In the end, while tremendously violating it could have been much worse than it was. The jerks took about $400 in change.  The containers that held the change were sentimental for Paul and I - an All Star game bank in the shape of a large beer bottle is what Paul had his change in.  I stored mine in a vintage Snoopy carafe and I had a smaller carafe full of bicentennial quarters that I've saved for 30 years. They left things like Paul's wedding ring and his checkbook that were in the room.  At the time we thought that was all that was taken.  It was just money, no sensitive paperwork taken, no electronics etc.  Then, the night before school was to start, we are prepping supplies and find that the idiots took Ryan's brand new back pack (pictured earlier).  Likely to haul all that change out.  That was the hardest part (outside of the feeling violated) about this entire scenario. It now impacted Ryan, took a wonderful gift from Kerri and Sam - and it was an AWESOME backpack. When Kerri learned of this, she graciously acted quickly and sent Ryan another UW backpack.  It's not what he had before, but it does take the place of what he lost.
We also experienced some mail theft (just this week) prompting us to be a secure mailbox.
Infuriating.
Work hard for what we have, and have it taken by those that have evil in their heart.

***********************************************

That brings us to the start of the school year, 2015-2016.  Kathryn starting 1st grade, Ryan starting 2nd grade.  The year started with somber note.  The delightful young teacher who was to teach Ryan's class died suddenly in a car accident 2 weeks before school started.  Heartbreaking for the whole school.  We were all excited to have her teach Ryan, she was young, energetic and had 11 years of experience.  A true loss.  At this time, 2nd grade has an interim teacher, Mrs. Rossiter who came out of retirement to help the school year get started.  The search for a permanent teacher is still on.  I asked Ryan yesterday, "What is your favorite part of 2nd grade so far?"  His response:  "My teacher."  I'm so grateful for this teacher who briefly changed her path to be a part of 2nd grade.

Kathryn had a rough few days getting settled in to this school year but has blossomed with the structure, her teacher and being back with her friends.

Now, September has been full of activities and changes.  The biggest and by far super exciting for me was the replacement of our yucky rugs, with laminate flooring.  It's quite a process getting to the end point, but it is complete and I could not be more happy!  I finally feel as if I can get my house clean. Those carpets taunted me, they just exuded dirt. Good-bye carpet!

The carpet looks decent here - but good riddance.
Our living room to prep/empty the bedrooms. Kennel in the middle as Demeter-kitties home for the day.
 Yuck
 In process. . . . .
 Behold!
 This is the master bedroom.
 Ryan's finished room.
 Kathryn's finished room.
Next on the home improvement agenda: either new windows for those that need to be replaced, or continue to put money aside to replace the oil furnace with a heat pump (to the tune of approx $9000 - ouch).  It's good to have the means to save for this - thanks to Paul's better job this year.   Paul and I think the van is within a year or two of dying, so there is that.  And. . . we found ants in our crawl space after the carpet was ripped out.  They don't go anywhere in the house, except where we found them... they have a highway through the spot they carved out.  We don't believe they are carpenter ants, probably what's called moisture ants.  Still damaging to wood work/framework of the house.  That needs to be fixed ASAP.

Lastly, a few fun pictures to close.
Kathryn was telling her Dad about how the 1st grade class hamster (Harry Kevin Hamster) got out of his cage and was found shimmying between furniture.  She say's, "Dad it was like this".  He turns to find her, shimmying up our door frame.
 Lil' Monkey.
She's become a soccer player this fall. Her first experience with team sports.

And, awwwww....... this years school pictures are done.
My how they grow and change.
